Nick Worthington’s One Show Diary
New Zealand is one ofthe very few countries outside the USA invited on to The One Show Jury, represented by Nick Worthington, ECD of Colenso BBDO, Auckland. Afterselecting the long shortlist in Hawaii, the jury are back together inNew York deciding what gets metal and Merits. Here is Nick’s diary, exclusive to the Campaign Brief Asia Blog.
First up, Australia has played a blinder. Pretty much put NZ in the shade this year as far as I can see.
The Hamilton Island “Best job in the World”idea was the most discussed going into the “Best In Show” judging, withmost of the Americans and international judges raving about this. They’ve seen it, heard about it and like it. It’s lower key in Aus andNZ, but it’s hitting its target overseas, which is the point of atourist campaign. So awesome work there. No idea what we all did in theprivate vote, but as I say, it was up there at the top.
So was Sega “Offset the evil”,people loved this campaign and it got the biggest laugh of the week. But I suspect, even though it was much loved, that the moral debatethat happened when it was proposed as a “Best in Show” candidate willmean that it would be a tough one for some people to vote for. At leastfor the grand prize.
Yes James, “Salad Plate”was up there too, again people loved this campaign and although muchadmired I figure it won’t take out the big one but it must be tipped toget some metal.
The other big contenders were the “Thirsty Boy” who ran on to live tv shows and drank the water.
The brilliant Crest toothpaste campaign, “You can say anything with a smile”.
Nike’s genius “Next Level” football spot shot by Guy Richie.
Droga5’s heartwarming “million” project for phones for kids in NYC schools.
And Droga5’s “Sarah Silverman Great Schlep” for the US election.
All fiercely good.
And if you count Droga5, Aus has 5 out of the top 8 for “Best in Show” .
That’s pretty awesome.
Detailsof all the work that will be “in the book” come out tomorrow, I’llprobably be on a plane home by then, but Kevin from the One Show willsend it direct to you guys and I’d wager there would be a few callshappening to suggest someone gets their asses on a plane over here ifthey’re not here already.
Good work, our part of the world looks like we know what we’re doing at the moment.
Otherthings from our neck of the woods that look like they’re up there arethe Yellow Tree house, The reason we Photograph you, Schweppes “Burst”,Read at Work, TED brown paper bags, Sony headphones and the list goeson. But you’ll have to wait for the “What’s in the book” tomorrow.
I’d love to tell you, but none of us know anything for sure.
It will be a case of fingers crossed for metal.
Butthe most humbling thing I’ve seen since I’ve been here is a play called”33 variations” on Broadway, it was amazing, it starred Jane Fonda, shewas amazing, if Google’s right she’s 72 and she’s still got it inspades, the script writing was jaw-droppingly brilliant and Beethoven, well that’s real creative talent.

Yes, its amazing. You think you’ve done something great by writing a good 30 second commercial and then you see someone who has written a great 120 minute movie or play…something thats infinitely more brilliant….it sure puts what we do into perspective.
What a choice!
There’s some great work in there. Crest is hilarious. So is Salad Plate. And Droga5’s campaigns are just brilliant.
