Grey Hong Kong uses coasters to raise awareness of water shortages in remote China
People in arid regions in China face a serious problem with water shortages. But for people who live in Hong Kong, where there’s too much water so it’s easy for the problem to go unnoticed.
A Drop of Life is a non-profit organization dedicated to solving the water shortage problem in remote parts of China. It wanted to raise awareness in Hong Kong for this unnoticed problem.
Grey Hong Kong’s idea, “Words from Water”, used an innovative printing technique to create the world’s first miracle on a drink coaster.
The agency partnered with restaurants to distribute special coasters whenever a customer ordered a cold drink. At first glance, they looked like ordinary, plain coasters. But after condensation from the cold drink began to drip down, the message became clear.
People who saw the coasters instantly understood that these unnoticed few drops could mean life for those living in arid regions and were encouraged to take action to help.
Messages on the coasters:
1. A few drops of water amount to nothing? For children living in arid regions, it’s everything. Help the water shortage problem, donate to A Drop of Life
2. A few drops could go unnoticed. But they mean Life for those living in arid regions. Help the water shortage problem, donate to A Drop of Life
3. These few drops are purer than “drinking water” in arid regions. Help the water shortage problem, donate to A Drop of Life

…A bartender called Jesus once turned my my glass of Evian into Chateau Latour, and that was more than 2,000 years before this “world’s first miracle on a drink coaster” (as they are calling it, with admirable self-restraint and understatement.)
