Top international creatives gather in Kuala Lumpur to judge the Malaysian Kancil Awards
This year’s Malaysian Kancil Awards judging took place last week in Kuala Lumpur. This year’s jury was presided over by Jury President, Y&R Malaysia’s ECD, Gigi Lee and featured eight international judges and 50 local judges.
The jury came together to judge at a unique venue called Genovasi, a Design Thinking School. The judging was done swiftly over two days from 16 -17 October 2013. The Kancil Awards is acknowledged as Malaysia’s largest, most prestigious advertising awards competition.
The 8 international judges include: Yang Yeo, JWT Shanghai; Kentaro Kimura, Hakuhodo Kettle Tokyo; Thomas H Kim, Cheil Korea; Merlee Jaime, DDB DM9 Jayme Syfu, Phillipines; Scott McClelland, BBH Singapore; Pann Lim, Kinetic Singapore; Johnathan Yuen, whererootsare; and Andrew Petch, Saatchi & Saatchi, Manila. The call for entry theme was “Win More Than Metals” in which top winners will get a recommendation on LinkedIn by our international judges. This year saw a 20% increase in entries from 1258 in 2012 to 1512 in 2013.
The Kancil committee streamlined and realigned the entry categories to match global award shows and included four new categories (Film Craft; Mobile; Entertainment & Branded Content; Vernacular) – increasing total categories to 15 this year.
The results will be announce on Kancil’s Night – 8th November 2013 at the Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
In addition to the judging several of the international judges were involved in a half day “Judges Forum” held in a cinema hall in TGV, One Utama. The topic of the session was: “Advertising is Dead. Long live Creativity.”
Speakers were: Yang Yeo, JWT Shanghai; Danial Comar, Geonetry Asia; Thomas H Kim, Cheil, South Korea; Kentaro Kimura, Hakuhodo Kettle. The event was attended by industry professional and students. In total, over 200 filled the cinema hall to hear Asia’s leading creative icons share their experience, work and insights.
