JY Lay joins BBDO Malaysia as creative director
JY Lay has joined BBDO Malaysia as Creative Director focusing on digital growth.
Lay joins BBDO after a very successful stint at Creative Juice/TBWA where he picked up several awards in Cannes, Spikes, Kancils, Effies, LIA, NY Fest. Lay (pictured left) is a Proximity Malaysia alumni and was in the digital team during Proximity’s heyday and was instrumental in some of controversial work for Fonterra “Semak Gula”, when it caused a storm in the Growing up Milk Powder category. In his stint at Creative Juice, Lay was working closely with VJ Anand, the current BBDO Malaysia ECD.
Lay joins after the addition of Shune (pictured right) who also joined BBDO from Creative Juice as a Creative Director, where he was known for his work on Nandos, Cornetto, Tesco. Shune embodies doing work that is ballsy and brave.
Anand said, “I’m really happy to be reunited with Lay and Shune, some of the guys I really enjoyed working with in my previous stint. The kind of guys who get us all excited to go to work everyday just to see what they cook up with the team. They are Yin and Yang of sorts. Total opposites who make magical work together. One logic, one magic. I’m so excited about the kinda work we are gonna cook up here at BBDO. We’ve also got a really young creative team under them with some of he best talent in town.”

Lay is a hybrid creative who has 13 years of experience in both mainstream and digital platforms. A geek by heart and ardent collector of toys, comics and animation. Excited with the latest tech and anything retro. Lay has worked at Creative Juice/TBWA, FCB, BBDO, Arachnid Saatchi and has been responsible for managing local and regional accounts: Maxis Hotlink, Celcom Xpax, Umobile, Unilever (Walls, Cornetto, Lipton, Planta, Dove) Astro, Fonterra (Anmum/Anlene), Mars (Snickers/M&Ms/Whiskas/Pedigree), Drypers, MBF, Visa, Air Asia, HP, BMW/Mini, McDonalds, KFC, Samsung, Microsoft, Honda, Nissan, CIMB, Redbull, Energizer. He has won awards in LIA, Spikes, Adfest, New York Festival, Kancils, DMAM, AdAsia, Asia Interactive Awards, Effies and more.
Shune is a highly regarded copy-based creative director. He comes from a Below the Line background who knows how to get into people’s minds and mess with their feelings with his ideas and copy. He has previously worked at RappCollins, AirAsia, Mindvalley and a successful stint at Creative Juice Kuala Lumpur.
Shune is a champion of brave work and has worked on accounts such as BMW, Tune Hotel, Unilever (Walls, Cornetto, Lipton, Planta, Dove) Air Asia, F&N Malaysia, Giant, Tesco, McDonalds, RED FM and has picked up awards at Cannes, LIA, Spikes, Adfest and Effies.
BBDO Has been beefing up the creative team not just with the addition of the senior hires. In the last 8 months, they have hired some of the best young creatives in the country. Krystle Morais and Tatt, who joined from Leo Burnett Malaysia. Dafi who joined from Dentsu Indonesia – a Cannes Finalist and a Young Spikes Indonesia Winner, Mindy who joined from Saatchi Malaysia, and Niamh Spur, a theater actor turned writer to name a few.
